Savage FINcast – Episode 16: Gary Carlson, Grandfather of Image Comics!

Episode16-GCarlson

A new episode of the Savage FINcast rolls in with a brand new interview! This time Adam, Craig, and Jim have invited Vanguard co-creator Gary Carlson to talk about his career in comics. We have a fascinating discussion with Gary about his early days of producing the Megaton anthology comic during the 80s and working with young artist upstarts such as Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, and Angel Medina.  Gary discusses his years at Image Comics writing Supreme, Vanguard, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; and his creator owned line of comics, the critically acclaimed and cult classic, Big Bang Comics! Lastly, we talk in-depth about the recent 12-part Vanguard backup serial featured in the pages of Savage Dragon in which Gary wrapped up some major plots for the character.

CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT! To celebrate the conclusion of the 12-part Vanguard backup serial in the pages of Savage Dragon, and in honor of having Gary Carlson as a guest on the show, we are working in conjunction with DragonFan.net to conduct our first ever promotional contest! Visit https://DragonFan.net/?p=1309 to find out how you can win the “Ultimate Vanguard Signed Comic Collection” including 27 Vanguard-related comics signed by Vanguard’s creators, Erik Larsen and Gary Carlson; and artist extraordinaire Frank Fosco!!!

Savage FINcast – Episode 15: Print Lives! A Chat with Michel Fiffe

Banner15

The catch-up tango continues as Craig, Jim, and Raven open the episode discussing the latest Larsen-related news and reviewing Savage Dragon 184. Later on, the gang is joined by Michel Fiffe, quite possibly the hardest working comic book creator of 2013– and he’s a Savage Dragon enthusiast to boot!

Savage Dragon fans will recognize Michel as the editor of, and contributor to, the “Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies” series of back up stories that were featured in Savage Dragon from issue #160 to #171. In addition, Michel is known for work published in Image’s Popgun anthology and Brawl miniseries; and his creator-owned masterpieces, Zegas and COPRA.

The Fincasters chat with Fiffe about his love of Erik Larsen comics, putting together the Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies, creating comics, and why print still lives in everyone’s heart except Jim’s!

Savage FINcast – Episode 14: The Supremecast!

Episode14-SUPREMECAST!

The Savage FINcast takes a break this episode to usher in the first (and final) episode of THE SAVAGE SUPREMECAST! It’s a double dose of Supreme this episode as Craig, Jim, and Raven give Erik Larsen and Cory Hamscher’s run a send off in a grand manner by reviewing the final two issues back-to-back!   Who is the Super-Hero Champion of the World? Will the depowered Supremes regain their powers? What really happened to the Supremacy? Why are ducks so awesome? So many questions, but so little time! *yeek*

Savage FINcast – Episode 12: Ant and Anniversaries… featuring Erik Larsen!

Where does the time go? 365…ish days ago a band of intrepid Savage Dragon fans set out on a mission to talk about their favorite comic and post the results on the internet. They said they were crazy, that it couldn’t work. But… THEY. WERE. WRONG.

The Savage FINcast is one years old this month, with 14 episodes and 6 creator interviews to show for it. Not bad for a show that primarily focuses on one comic book title, eh? To celebrate their one year anniversary, Craig, Jim, and Raven reflect on old times from long ago; from the high points to the low. Then Erik Larsen returns to talk about his purchase of Mario Gully’s Ant character, the status of the Supreme comic, what Kickstarter might mean for comic creators, and what the future holds for Savage Dragon as it enters its 20th year of publication!

Being our big anniversary the team at the Savage FINcast would like to thank the following people; Eric Shonborn for advice about podcast recording techniques and sorting out hosting for the Savage FINcast. Couldn’t have done it without you buddy. Check his podcast out at Guttertrash.net. Also a shout-out to the gang over at The Legion of Substitute Podcasters for the inspiration on how to conduct a podcast about a single comic franchise. We would also like to thank Chris Partin and the guys at Image Addiction for including us in their family. And of course, a big thanks to all our listeners out there in cyberlandspace. You make it all worth it!
